영어권 위주의 진화이론에서는 자연스럽게 자연선택설을 주장한 찰스 다윈의 역할이 강조됩니다. 또 다윈과 동시에 어쩌면 다윈보다 먼저 알프레드 러셀 월리스가 이 생각을 했다는 이야기도 나옵니다. 그런데 다윈과 월리스가 활동하던 시기에도 퍼트릭 매튜라는 사람이 우선권을 주장하면서, 논란이 되었습니다.

퍼트릭 매튜(Patrick Matthew 1790-1874)가 1838년에 출판된 책에 이미 자연선택이론과 관련된 아이디어를 냈기 때문에 1958년에 알프레드 러셀 월리스가 다윈에게 보낸 논문 "On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely From the Original Type"이나 1859년에 <종의 기원 또는 자연선택에 의한 선호되는 종의 보존에 관하여>를 출판한 찰스 다윈보다 먼저라는 주장이 곧잘 나옵니다.

하지만 과학사 연구자의 관점에서 보면 이런 주장을 별로 큰 의미가 없다고 생각합니다. 누군가 어떤 아이디어를 가졌다고 해서 그것이 과학의 역사에서 중요한 기여를 하는 것은 아닙니다.. 여하간 그것이 발표되고 사람들이 어떻게 영향을 받았고 그로 인해 어떻게 사회가 변했는가 하는 것이 훨씬 더 중요합니다.

아래 인용문은 찰스 다윈이 퍼트릭 매튜에게서 편지를 받고 1861년에 출판된 <종의 기원> 3판에 덧붙인 내용입니다.

"Unfortunately the view was given by Mr. Matthew very briefly in scattered passages in an Appendix to a work on a different subject, so that it remained unnoticed until Mr. Matthew himself drew attention to it in the 'Gardener's Chronicle,' on April 7th, 1860. The differences of Mr. Matthew's view from mine are not of much importance: he seems to consider that the world was nearly depopulated at successive periods, and then re-stocked; and he gives, as an alternative, that new forms may be generated "without the presence of any mould or germ of former aggregates." I am not sure that I understand some passages; but it seems that he attributes much influence to the direct action of the conditions of life. He clearly saw, however, the full force of the principle of natural selection. In answer to a letter of mine (published in Gard. Chron., April 13th), fully acknowledging that Mr. Matthew had anticipated me, he with generous candour wrote a letter (Gard. Chron. May 12th) containing the following passage:—"To me the conception of this law of Nature came intuitively as a self-evident fact, almost without an effort of concentrated thought. Mr. Darwin here seems to have more merit in the discovery than I have had; to me it did not appear a discovery. He seems to have worked it out by inductive reason, slowly and with due caution to have made his way synthetically from fact to fact onwards; while with me it was by a general glance at the scheme of Nature that I estimated this select production of species as an à priori recognisable fact—an axiom requiring only to be pointed out to be admitted by unprejudiced minds of sufficient grasp."
